Cine-Check. Disney boycotted ‘Anastasia’ because of the war in Ukraine?

“Now the war is over. The United States has removed the ‘Anastasia’ animation from Diffusion from Disney”, writes a user, in a publication dated March 3, who also shares a screenshot of an alleged news item on the subject. According to the article, the movie “Anastasia” is no longer available on the Disney Plus platform in the United States.

THE film is inspired by the legend of Princess Anastasia, supposedly the only daughter of Tsar Nicholas II who survived the murder of her family in 1918 after the Russian Revolution.

Also on Twitter, several users expressed their dissatisfaction with Disney’s decision. “After seeing the childish level of this war with countries boycotting the sale of vodka, Disney+ boycotting ‘Anastasia’ in their catalog,” one user wrote on March 4.

But will it really be so?

Nope. The polygraph probed the site which appears in screenshot publication, a page created by Disney fans, and found the news which caused outrage among fans of the animated film. According to the March 1 article, the film “Anastasia” not available on the Disney Plus platform in the United States.

However, the news was updated later and the title that now appears is “‘Anastasia’ removed from Disney+ for contractual reasons (US)”. In the article, however, it is mentioned that the withdrawal of the film was a surprise because Disney+ does not usually advertise the titles that will come out of the catalog, unlike other platforms like Netflix and Hulu.

Also on March 1, the site WhatsOnDisneyPlus shared the news of the withdrawal of the film “Anastasia”, but explained the reasons. In the text we can read that “has nothing to do with the current crisis involving Ukraine and Russia“.

“With the start of a new month, Disney is sometimes forced to remove some of its content from Disney+ in the United States due to pre-existing contracts, signed before the creation of the platform. Unfortunately, this month, 20th Century Studios’ animated classic “Anastasia” was pulled from Disney+ in the United States. However, the film will continue available in other countries. This withdrawal from Disney+ has nothing to do with the current crisis involving Ukraine and Russia.”

But if the “Anastasia” rumor is wrong, in reality, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led Disney to announce a break in the premiere of films in Russiaincluding Pixar’s upcoming film, “Turning Red.”
