Ethan Hawke plays one of the year’s scariest villains in this new movie

“The Black Telephone” centers on a serial killer who kidnaps children. Premieres in Portugal this Thursday.

Ethan Hawke is the lead actor.

it’s called “The Black Phone” and is a new horror film that hits Portuguese theaters this Thursday, June 23. Followed by Ethan Hawkea versatile and much-loved actor who may never have played a real villain, was directed by Scott Derrickson — who carried out this project after quitting in the middle of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”

It was a kind of “back to basics” for this filmmaker who had already worked with Hawke on “Sinister – The Entity”, another horror story. The story of “The Black Telephone” is based on the eponymous short story by Joe Hill, the son of “master of terror” Stephen King, published in 2005.

The plot takes place in the city of Denver, United States, in the late 70s. This is where Scott Derrickson grew up, at a time of tension and violence, beatings between teenagers, harsh parents and brutal and from the shadow of Ted Bundy, the serial killer who at the same time committed several homicides in the state of Colorado.

This real fantasy (which also includes 70s rock and a sensational new film, “The Texas Massacre”) is mixed with fantastical and supernatural elements. The story centers on The Grabber (Ethan Hawke), an enigmatic man who kidnaps and murders children or teenagers.

The kid we follow throughout an hour and 42 minutes of action is Finney, who is taken by the villain to his sinister basement – where he torments his victims. In this spooky location, Finney discovers a bizarre telephone, through which he receives help messages from the apparent ghosts of The Grabber’s previous victims.

Finney has an alcoholic widowed father who beats him with his belt, and his sister Gwen who has an acute sixth sense – their telltale dreams also begin to interest the police, at some point in the plot, and may help save Finney.

In interview to IndieWire, Scott Derrickson explained that he hadn’t written the role with Ethan Hawke in mind, but was the first person he had invited, albeit somewhat indirectly.

“I called him and said: I have the next movie I’m doing and it’s with Jason [Blum, o produtor]. He’s a villain, and let me tell you now why maybe you shouldn’t. For starters, he’s a pedophile and a sadistic killer. Second, he almost always wears a mask, so you don’t see much of his face. Other than that, it’s a great role. »

Apparently, Ethan Hawke replied, “I don’t play bad guys much, it should be a lot like Jack Nicholson in ‘The Shining’.” The next morning, the director had a voicemail from Ethan Hawke to listen to. The actor had read the script and recorded the reading of certain scenes, in a deep and sinister voice, revealing that he had just accepted the role.

“That was one of the reasons I wanted Ethan Hawke to play one of the scariest villains of the year in this new movie first for Ethan. He has one of the most distinctive voices. I think people don’t appreciate how unique his voice is. He has incredible range. Can speak in a high voice very naturally, but can also speak in a low voice. He used it for The Grabber,” Derrickson explained, adding that the actor also liked that he couldn’t use his face as much and had to supplement the performance with his voice and body movements.

The list also includes names such as Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davis, E. Roger Mitchell, Rude Seal of Troy Where James Ransonamong others.
