Today, May 17, the day that marks International Recycling Day, Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV) announces the “Join Gervásio” Award national initiative, which aims to highlight and reward projects in the field of packaging recycling and the circular economy, developed within local communities, by parish councils, local entities (such as associations or cooperatives) and individual or collective citizens.
The application phase begins tomorrow and ends on July 31.
The official presentation took place this morning, in Jardim da Estrela, with the presence of the Secretary of State for Environment and Energy, João Galamba, the President of ANAFRE – National Association of Parishes, Jorge Veloso, the president of the parish council of Estrela, Luís Newton, and the vice-president of Rock in Rio, Roberta Medina, who were joined respectively by Ana Trigo Morais and Teresa Cortes, CEO and marketing and communication coordinator of Sociedade Ponto Verde.
The “Junta-te ao Gervásio” award is open to parish councils, proximity entities (namely social economy organizations, such as associations, foundations or cooperatives; small and micro-enterprises and entrepreneurs) and social citizenship (individuals or groups, entrepreneurs and other entities such as condominiums or scout groups, among others) located throughout the national territory. These are the three categories that make up the competition.
Those interested in participating can submit an application, integrated into one of the categories, via recicla.pt/juntateaogervasio.ptwhere all the information is available.
Eligible are projects carried out in local communities in the last 12 months (between June 2021 and July 2022), which contribute or have contributed in a sustainable way to the improvement and separation of packaging for recycling, which are based on the paradigm of circularity and which can serve as a reference, accelerators of imagination for replicability in other community contexts.
The jury will assess criteria such as the innovative nature of the project, its economic, social and environmental impact on the local community, and whether it promotes the practice of recycling packaging – that is, the three dimensions that make up the alignment of the SPV strategy are considered (innovate, evolve and recycle).
A TOP corresponding to each of the three categories will be chosen, with cash prizes and honorable mentions. Thus, in the “Parishes” category, 1st place will be awarded (a sculpture made from recycled materials to be installed in your locality) and 9 honorable mentions; in “Local Entities” and “Social Citizenship”, a top 3 is planned with the awarding of monetary prizes, totaling €15,000, and honorable mentions, two in each category.
“The Junta-te ao Gervásio award reinforces SPV’s outreach work with local communities, in an aspect that goes beyond raising awareness of the importance of recycling packaging. What the SPV does is promote active community participation, whether promoted by parish councils, businesses and other more or less organized citizen organizations or movements,” says Ana Trigo Morais, CEO of Society Ponto Green.
Jorge Veloso, President of the National Association of Parishes, states that “ANAFRE, as a partner in this project, believes that the awarding of the Junta-te ao Gervásio prize by the Sociedade Ponto Verde will highlight good practices in the parishes, strengthening our work of effective proximity with our citizens.
“We are convinced that high value projects will come to us from all over the national territory, demonstrating that much is already being done locally, and that these good practices can have the potential to be replicated in other regions, for the benefit of more people and the environment”, concludes Ana Trigo Morais.
The “Junta-te ao Gervásio” award is promoted by Sociedade Ponto Verde and has the support of APA – Portuguese Environmental Agency and ANAFRE – National Association of Parishes and ISCTE Executive Education as as a knowledge partner.
