O FC Porto are preparing to end the season against Tondela in the Portuguese Cup final. After winning the title of national champion, the dragons will fight for another one-two.
The last “bis” with the championship and the Portuguese Cup won by the blue and white emblem dates back to 2019/20, at the same time Marchesín arrived at Dragão. The Argentinian took an active part in these two conquests, quickly gaining notoriety for his performances.
However, after three years, Marchesín should say goodbye to Invicta at the end of this season and with the title in the “queen race”.
The exchange of roles with Diogo Costa
In his first season, when Casillas was no longer part of the plans due to health issues, Marchesín assumed the lead role in the white and blue goal. With two years of excellence between the posts, the Argentinian has reached 84 games with a dragon on his chest.
However, Sérgio Conceição’s plan for this season was different. With the entry of several youngsters into the team, such as João Mário, Vitinha, Fábio Vieira and Francisco Conceição, the goal also underwent a change. Marchesín jumped off the bench and Diogo Costa ‘robbed’ his starter, playing 43 games, as many as Marchesín played last season.
The 34-year-old keeper has played just eight games all season between the Europa League, I Liga and the Portuguese Cup.

Opposition to the administration of Sérgio Conceição
During the third year working at FC Porto, Marchesín ended up admitting that he was not in favor of being a substitute. The Argentinian has left it up in the air again, in the conquest of the national title, which will be more focused on an exit than on continuity.
“It’s a World Cup year and obviously my situation hurts me a lot. I’m not used to it, but it’s up to me to support. Diogo Costa, when I played, always behaved very well with me, so I just have to support him at a big club and the names are the least important,” he said on the Dragão pitch on the day FC Porto ended their participation in the I Liga.

The end of the contract forces the sale
Marchesín’s case is similar to that of Alex Telles. The Brazilian, in the 2020/21 season, ended his relationship with FC Porto. With no agreement on renewal, the club were forced to sell the player after hours and accept any offers not to be ’empty-handed’.
With Marchesín, the same thing happens. The Argentinian terminates his contract in 2023 and, not being a starter or having the intention of continuing at Dragão, “forces” the management of Porto to sell him before the end of the contract, that is say this summer.
In 2019/20, when he arrived, Marchesín was 31 and cost around €7.7million at the blue and white boxes. At this stage, at 34 and with eight games played this season, the six million euros on the market would mean a good adjustment for the dragons, who thus avoid having to sell other assets.
If FC Porto does not give in to a transfer this summer, Marchesín can take the “blow” and, from January 2023, prepare for a departure at zero cost.

Exit with ‘double’ in the pocket
In the six games played by FC Porto in this edition of the Portuguese Cup, Marchesín has started all of them. After being one of the main responsible for the triumphs in the semi-finals, against Sporting, the Argentinian is about to close the season with a new and last title in the “queen competition”.
Holder of the goal of the competition, Marchesín should not be relegated by Sérgio Conceição in the big match of the competition. If they win over Tondela, it will be the second Portuguese Cup and, therefore, the second double in Marchesín’s program.

The Argentinian, more inclined to a match with new tunes, can close the passage through the Dragon with a golden key. The Portuguese Cup final between FC Porto and Tondela will be played next Sunday at the Jamor.
