Charles Leclerc, in Ferrari, won the 35th edition of the Austrian Grand Prix, the 19th at Spielberg. The Monegasque, in the 11th round of this 22-race championship, overtook Max Verstappen, in Red Bull, after 71 laps of the Spielberg circuit, adding only the 1st success in Formula 1 without starting from pole – 2nd position in the yesterday’s sprint, behind the defending champion and 2022 World Cup commander, sent him back to 2nd on the starting grid.
For Leclerc, 3rd victory of the season and, above all, recovery from 2nd position in the Drivers’ World Championship and reduction of the handicap for Verstappen, from 44 points to 38. In Austria, in 3rd, for the 3rd consecutive time this year, Lewis Hamilton in Mercedes. At the Red Bull Ring, 71 very busy laps: the 7 leaders and the 6 changes at the top of the classification confirm it!
Strategically, Ferrari is more successful than Red Bull, but the Scuderia suffered to celebrate Leclerc’s victory. On lap 57, as he tackled Verstappen and looked to earn 2nd position, taking advantage of the accelerated degradation of Max’s RB18 tyres, fellow Scuderia driver Carlos Sainz dropped out of the grand prix, with the engine block of the single-seater on fire. . Almost simultaneously, Charles reported throttle issues to the team, which persisted until the checkered flag.
Further, many fights. Elected by the fans as “driver of the day”, Mick Schumacher scored points in Formula 1 for the 2nd time – and consecutively! –, finishing the Austrian Grand Prix in 6th position, the best result of his career, after an 8th place in Great Britain.
The twelfth round of the World Cup, the Grand Prix de France, takes place on the 24th, on the Circuit de Paul Ricard, at Le Castellet.
