Three Thousand Years of Longing is a romance movie with stunning visuals

when we think of george miller Think about madmax. After all, of his ten feature films, four are part of the series. Well, he appears with a very different production at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Three thousand years of nostalgia (which can be loosely translated as “Three thousand years of aspiration”) featuring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elbe and screened out of competition, it is a film about love, love of all cultures, love of humanity.

What hasn’t changed is the Australian filmmaker’s taste for elaborate and original visuals. Even though it’s a love story based on a fairy tale, AS Byatt, Three thousand years of nostalgia it’s perfect for that.

In it, Alithea (Swinton) is an expert in narratology and studies the similarities of stories told by human beings since ancient times. During a trip to Istanbul, she buys an old glass bottle. Inside is a Djinn (Elba), a figure from Arabian mythology that is similar in many other cultures. He’s a genius in the lamp, but don’t expect a blue Idris Elba like Will Smith from Aladdin. The character has a more sophisticated visual design.

The Djinn offers three wishes to Alithea. But she’s interested in your story. And the story of the Djinn, almost a therapy for his 3,000 years of imprisonment, recovers part of the stories of humanity or the stories told by humanity, such as that of the Queen of Sheba, which appears in the Torah , the Bible, the Koran and history. Ethiopian, or Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who ruled the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. These are stories that offer George Miller the opportunity to exercise his creativity, to the sound of the beautiful score by Tom Holkenborg, the composer of Mad Max: Fury Road.

The interest of the Djinn is to understand humanity. He shouldn’t, but he feels like a human, falls in love with mortals, and has to deal with his trauma. So it’s not just a magical being. Alithea feels through the stories, because she decided to avoid living them. In principle, she does not even have desires. Miller has an acting duo with enough charisma and talent to handle those dimensions.

But don’t expect heart-pounding action scenes like those in Mad Max: Fury Road. It was a story of survival in extreme circumstances, of oppression, chaos and madness. Three thousand years of nostalgia looks more optimistic. Alithea comments that nothing changes in human history, that in times of confusion human beings give in to their worst instincts. The Djinn replies that it’s being human, but prefers to talk about love. How to lose hope when human beings have found so many beautiful ways to explain the events of the world?

The film ridicules anyone who believes they belong to a superior culture for being in the West. Human history began in Africa and Asia, and the stories and myths that flow from it are rich. The three main religions originated in the Middle East. George Miller beautifully and lyrically shows that, in fact, human beings are more alike than they care to imagine. And maybe what makes us human is the stories we tell or make up.

The director had this project for more than 20 years, but he could not have been better off. During the pandemic, we have all realized how stories are as fundamental to our survival as water, food and clean air. It would be better if we were also open to stories from other parts of the world, about different characters, that show us how human we are.
